Note: Eisler writes that her parents, to preserve the family name, had introduced a clause in their will that required the husband of their daughter to take the Gordon name as his own, which John Byron was eager to do, making the family surname Gordon [n.b.: Byron is both familial surname and baronial title]. However, McGann (in ODND) and others list her as Catherine Byron née Gordon, and give the family surname as Byron. It is the Byron surname that is transmitted to descendants.
