Note: said to be from old French narrative. It is a Milesian tale from Petronius's Satyricon, and updated by La Fontaine. Soldier guarding hanged corpse seeks comfort in house of widow, and the hanged corpse is stolen. To save him, she offers husband's corpse as replacement. Alternate endings.
