Women Travelers

Biographies almost always state the place of birth, of residence, and of death. Most women's lives traditionally were limited as to travel except in crises such as war or exile (male relatives might be soldiers, sailors, diplomats, traders, explorers). But with literacy and improved means of travel, women could become notable as travelers, particularly through what they wrote about their travels. Currently, 132 women form a cohort of the type "traveler, travel writer," including Frances Trollope, the center of one of our sample corpora (like Lola Montez). These women travelers differ widely by era, occupation (not all were writing for a living), social rank, where they traveled, and so on.
